Here’s What to Expect at Alliance Jiu Jitsu Atlanta
Starting something new can feel intimidating — especially when that something is a martial art. If you’ve been curious about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but unsure where to begin, you’re not alone. Most adults and parents who walk into Alliance Jiu Jitsu Atlanta felt the same way at first.
What Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (often called BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on leverage, technique, and control rather than size or strength. Instead of strikes, BJJ teaches you how to control an opponent on the ground, defend yourself safely, and stay calm under pressure. That is why it works for beginners, adults of all fitness levels, and kids.
Do I Need to Be in Shape to Start?
No. This is one of the most common questions we hear. You don’t need to be in peak shape before starting. Training is how you build fitness, strength, and confidence. Classes are structured and level-based, so beginners are not thrown into situations they are not ready for.
What Students Notice Right Away

Adults and Kids
Adults train for self-defense, a hard workout, stress relief after work, or a skill that lasts. You start with fundamentals, build confidence through drilling, and progress into sparring only when you’re ready. You can train Gi, No-Gi, and fundamentals, intermediate, and advanced classes.
Parents often want more than another after-school activity. Kids and teens build confidence, self-control, discipline, focus, and respect. Classes are age- and skill-level appropriate.
What Your First Class Will Be Like
Your first class isn’t about proving anything. You’ll be shown where to go, what to do, and how class works. Coaches guide you through everything, and training partners help you feel comfortable. You don’t need to know any techniques. You don’t need special gear. You just need to show up.
